RAEFORD, NORTH CAROLINA THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25, IWJ "Cfjrtetmaa CTree" In Glastonbury, Somerset England, stands a tree called the Holy Thorn which is believed to have bloomed without fail on Christmas Day for over a thousand years. The famous legend of the Thorn Tree says: Two days before Christmas, sixty-three years after the birth of Christ St. Joseph of Arimathea, who had with him the Holy Grail, paused to rest on a hill outside of Glaston bury. He drove his staff into the ground. It took root and the next day, Christmas Eve, it had grown into a flowering thorn tree. mm h nil May your holidays be bright and filled with special joys Graham's Service Station Best wishes for a merry Christmas to you, our friends and patrons . . . from all the folks who serve you down at William L Poolo Agoncy 1 c I rnzi rrf:;r itj; ...... - " A jr. 1 r r a. ; - !. n , ' . So John Smith wrote of the few days he and his men spent with the natives at the end of December 1608 when he was seeking provisions of the Indian chief, Powhatan. "Make a joyful noise un to the Lord, all ye lands" Christmas timel That man must be a misanthrope in deed, in whose breast some thing like a jovial feeling is not aroused in whose mind some pleasant associations are not awakened by the recurrence of Christmas. There are people who will tell you that Christmas is not to them what it should be . . . Never heed such dismal reminiscences . . . Dwell not upon the past . . Holiday Moon A waxing moon is more favorable at Christmas than a waning one, according to an old Scottish folk belief. Some say that ever 'gainst that season comes, Wherein our Saviour's birth is celebrated. The bird of dawning singeth all night long; And then, they say, no spirit can walk abroad; The nights are wholesome; thep no planets strike, No fairy takes, no witch hath power to charm; So hallow'd and gracious is the time. Christmas dinner is an elaborate affair but one reserved for the intimate family group, behind locked doors and drawn blinds.
